2nd March 2016

Spring Letter 4

Dear Parents

This should be the last newsletter of a very busy Spring Term. It contains lots of useful information and should bring everyone up to date before the Easter break.

Thursday 3rd March

Thursday 3rd March is World Book Day, every child at school will receive their one pound book voucher to spend on a book of their choice. We will be dressing up this year and marking the day with a special worship time and activities in the classrooms.

Hatch It

For two weeks, from Monday 7th March, the children will be able to enjoy a very special experience. Thanks to the Friends who have supported this project, all of the children will be able to watch ten eggs as they hatch and the young chicks appear. We will be putting regular update photos onto the school website throughout the length of the project. When the chicks are old enough the children will have the chance to hold them. Look out for regular updates on the website.

Sport Relief Day

Sport Relief Day is on Friday 18th March 2016 and all children except Year 6 and Reception will be able to wear sports gear for their £1 donation to the Sport Relief charity. Year 6 and Reception will be having their school photographs taken during this day therefore they must attend school in their uniform and bring their sports gear to change into.

Easter Lunch

This years’ Easter Lunch will take place on Wednesday 23rd March 2016. All orders should be made by Thursday 10th March please. Payments are on-line under ‘school meal’.

Wear-a-Hat day

We are supporting Brain Tumour Research and we would like lots of Easter themed hats on Tuesday 22nd March. There will be a prize for the best Easter hat in each class. Please send in £1 for the Charity.

Easter Worship

Children from Year 6 will be taking part in the Midweek Eucharist Service at St John’s on Wednesday 23rd March. The whole school Easter Worship will take place on Thursday 24th March at 10 a.m. at St John’s Church. It is always a lovely service. I hope many of you will be able to attend.

Easter Holidays

Please remember that the school finishes for the Easter Holidays at 2.15 p.m. on Thursday 24th March and re-opens on Tuesday 12th April.

Sainsbury’s Vouchers

We are currently collecting Sainsbury’s vouchers for schools. Thanks go to Mrs Onslow who is kindly counting the vouchers this year for us.

Bilton Gala & Non Uniform Day

This years’ Bilton Gala will be held on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May. The Friends will be holding their chocolate tombola stall. A non-uniform day will be held for chocolate tombola donations on Friday 22nd April 2016.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Monday 29th February saw the start of Fairtrade Fortnight. Mrs Jones ran an assembly and is doing workshops with Nidderdale and Swaledale. On Friday 11th March all children will be offered a Fairtrade breakfast snack for a 20p donation which has been kindly supplied by Asda.

Space Week

Thank you for supporting our space week. The children looked out of this world in their creative costumes. We also raised £196.68, after expenses, towards space equipment. A special thank you to our many visitors in school during this week.

Illness at St Johns

The wishes of all the Governors, staff and pupils are with Simon Dowson and his family while he recovers from illness.

Snow and Ice

Whilst last year was a very mellow winter, we are now approaching the season when the school can be affected by snow and ice. Please check the policies and procedures below:

  • Parents will all be informed by text message and announcement on Stray FM if the school is closed.
  • If open, all pathways will be cleared and gritted before gates are opened. Please stay on the marked pathways.
  • Staff will be on duty to direct all parents and children to the appropriate doorway.
  • If you arrive late please enter school by the main entrance only. Do not attempt to take your child to their class door.
  • If bad weather becomes an issue during the school day, the school will always remain open until every child has been collected.

Administering Medicines in School

Please note that parents will be strongly advised and encouraged to keep their children at home if acutely unwell or infectious.

If parents need to bring medicine for administering during the school day:-

  1. Parents are responsible for providing the Headteacher with comprehensive information regarding the pupil’s condition and medication.
  2. Prescribed medication will not be accepted in school without complete written and signed form from the parent (available at the school office). Pupils must not carry medicines to school – these should be brought to the office by an adult.
  3. Staff will not give a non-prescribed medicine to a child.

Sports

Well done to our KS2 TAG rugby team who played enthusiastically in the mud. Thank you to Mr Starkey for supporting this event.

We are sending a team of Year 5/6 to St Aidan’s on Thursday for a Quicksticks hockey competition. They have been busy practising and we wish them luck.

Values

For the rest of this term we will be focusing on the value of respect. We have talked in school about politeness, good language and how we show respect to all members of our school community. I have attached a blue respect leaf for our school tree. Please write on this and send it to school when you notice your child showing this value. We are aiming for our tree to be full of blue leaves by Easter.
