Before we look to the week ahead I would like to congratulate our Yr5/6 mental maths team who came an excellent third place in last Friday’s Harrogate Town Schools Mental Maths Competition at Harrogate Grammar School. This is our third top three finish in the last three years! Well done to everyone who participated and to Mrs Crisell for taking the team.

The last week of this half term is one of the busiest of the year so far. On Monday Coverdale Class will have a visit from a local beekeeper teaching them the importance of bees to our environment. After school it is week seven of the Harrogate Theatre Club in the library. We will also be handing out the last Super Pupil Certificates of this half term.

As part of their study of World War 2 the children in Wharfedale and Wensleydale will be holding a special Anne Frank Day on Tuesday. At the same time the team from the Harrogate Diving Club will be holding a talent identification day in school; during previous visits they identified several children who went on to be successful members of the club and enjoyed diving as a sport.

On Wednesday we welcome Mr Green to lead our worship time whilst after school it is the last session of Tchouckball for children in Yr5/6 at Harrogate High School. The choir will continue to practise for their special Kids Aloud Concert on Wednesday after school.

Thursday is a very special day as we hold our first ever space camp at RTS. The first group to participate will be the year 5 children from Coverdale Class; we are all hoping for clear skies and a great evening. The school would like to thank ASDA, and particularly their community champion Angela Smith, who has provided much of the food for space camp. Before the stars come out Mrs Zealand will be in after school leading week four of our street dance after school club.

School ends for half term on Friday with Tea and Cakes for children in each class chosen for their excellent manners and behaviour. Please note that school ends at the usual time of 3.15pm and we open for the new half term as usual on Monday 4th March.

You may have noticed that the builders have been back to complete the external work to our new entrance. The hope is to open our new entrance and office space to parents on Monday 11th March with a formal grand opening and special guest at a date to be announced later in the term.

Please remember that The first week back after half term is Fairtrade Fortnight; we will be selling Fairtrade Malawian Rice again and this week our Fairtrade Community Champions will be creating a Fair Trade Logo to be displayed in town as part of the Harrogate’s Celebration of Fairtrade Fortnight.

Finally, I would like to give you a quick update regarding my own health; unfortunately just when I was due to step up my return to work my wound became infected; without any grisly details I have had to undergo further treatments to fight the infection. I have managed 2 days a week recently but hope to be back to something like normal after the half term break. Thank you to all of the wonderful staff and children at RTS who have carried on without me and special mention to Mrs Crisell who has led the school magnificently in my absence.

I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable half term and I look forward to seeing you when we return for the 2nd half of the spring term.

Andrew Symonds
