Our foundation stage class are the youngest children in school, taught by Mrs Rothera and Mrs Longstaffe, and assisted by Mrs Finlinson. Our class dinosaur is called Dexter, he likes to spend his weekends with the children in Bishopdale. Our reception age children follow the Early years Foundation Stage Curriculum as set out by the DfES. This emphasises the need for children to learn in an active way through play and practical activities, both indoors and out.

The foundation stage introduces children to many of the skills that they will need throughout their school careers. Children learn to interact with others in a positive, constructive and respectful manner. They develop concentration, cooperation and communication skills whilst becoming creative, confident thinkers. Through a range of fun class, group and individual activities, we encourage children to develop independence in thought and action. Our favourite activities include exploring the outdoor area, being creative and cooking. The children’s interests form the basis of our weekly activities.

We aim to develop a strong partnership with parents. We send home bi-weekly observations of the children using the 2simple 2build a profile app, we regularly meet with parents to discuss the children’s learning development and we operate an open door policy. In addition, we welcome parents to many more formal events such as, our annual introducing reading evening and end of year song and dance celebration. We are enormously grateful for the help parents provide in school and the support given to the children at home with the development of letters and sounds knowledge through to reading.
